Chinese Food Please

February 23, 2012

I am not a big fan on Chinese food but something I do love from this food culture is rice. I could eat rice all day long. White rice and fried rice are my favorites!

Today for lunch I wanted to make something quick and easy before I had to leave for work. I found a pack of Uncle Ben’s rice and decided I would make that and mix it in with some egg. So I put the pack of rice in the microwave for about 70 seconds. It says 90 but I did it my way . Then I cracked an egg and mixed the egg on a pan with a spatula. The temperature of the stove was on a medium level. Then as the egg looked almost finished I took some rice and pour it onto the pan with the egg. Not too much because then you wont be able to mix the two things together. I took my spatula and mixed the egg in with the rice all on the pan for about a min. Then I turned off the stove and put the rice I had just made on a paper plate with a fork. I added some soy sauce to add flavor. YUM! This only took about 10 mins to make and the total cost was under $10! You can’t beat a quick easy and healthy meal from China!

Here is a recipe for a unique type of Chinese food from a fellow blogger!

After working all day today I came home and was starving! My roommate made lasagna but her boyfriend ate it all. So I was left to fend for myself . I was in the mood for italian and decided to start looking through my freezer to see what kind of things I had. I found meatballs, and pepperoni from my last recipe. So I cooked the meatballs for about 5 to 7 min in a frying pan. Then I placed one pepperoni on top of each meatball and added a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. After that I took some Ragu sauce and placed a small amount in a microwave safe bowl and covered the bowl with a papertowl and cooked the sauce for about 35 seconds. Then I took a sub roll I had and placed the meatballs on there and took a spoon and put some of the sauce on top of the meatballs and pepperoni. This only took about 20 mins to make and was good! As I am typing this I want to make another one!

The Baltimore Sun provided a great recipe on Italian Meatball subs for tailgating at Ravens Games but you can learn how to make these just in time for baseball season. Click Here

Next Stop Italy

February 16, 2012

After leaving the quesadillas behind in Mexico. I decided to make my next stop at a country that my great grandparents came from.. Italy. I did not know exactly what I was in the mood for I just knew I wanted something Italian. So when I was shopping at target I found a pack of noodles for 95 cents! Who can pass up that offer?

I decided I wanted to make a pasta but a different type of pasta you don’t usually see people making. After looking through my cabinets and refrigerator I found peperonis and put my thinking cap on. I thought why don’t I chop up the peporonis and put them in with the pasta noodles. So I gave it a try.

Ingredients: Pack of Pasta Noodles,Pepperoni,Marinara Sauce,Stove,Pot,Milk,Water,cutting board,knife

1. I put 1 cup of water and a half cup of milk into a pot and let it boil for about 3 minutes.

2.Then I dumped the pasta into the pot and stirred occasionally. Cook the pasta for about 8 minutes.

3. Next drain the pasta and let it sit in the pot and cool down, while the pasta is cooling down take 7 peporonis or however many you want in your pasta and chop them up on a cutting board. The peporonis are kind of hard to cut without moving so you would only be able to slice them once either vertically or horizonatally.

4.After you slice the peporonis take about 1 cup of marinara sauce and put it in a bowl and heat it in the microwave for about 40 seconds, make sure to cover the bowl or sauce will get everywhere in your microwave.

5. Take the cuttingboard and scrape the peporonis into the pot with the pasta. Then take the sauce and dump it into the pot with the pasta and the peporonis.

7. Stir ingredients for about 15 seconds. and finito! (finished in Italian)

This serves about 1 to 2 people or it can be used as a side dish. It was actually quite interesting to taste because my taste buds have never tried something so unique before! The whole meal cost under 10 dollars and it only took about 15 minuets to make and its healthy ( Just click this link from the National Pasta Association to see how healthy Pasta actually is)!. Not bad for a college kid ey?

I found this website to be Interesting and loaded with Pasta recipes and facts I never even knew existed.

Queso-Taco Old Bay

February 9, 2012

I wanted to travel to MEXICO. I love Quesadillas. However, they usually come in chicken or steak and are from Taco Bell. Although it is cheap but it isn’t the healthiest.  I only had ground beef in my freezer so I decided to try making a ground beef taco/Quesadilla my very own way. I put my taste buds to the test and couldnt resist the urge to add old bay when I saw it sitting propped up on the top of my stove. I also wanted to add salt and pepper. Some of you may be thinking this is completely weird but just try it out you might love it !

Ingredients: Shredded Cheese, Old Bay, Salsa, Tortilla, Salt & Pepper, ground beef

  1. Spray a little cooking spray on a pan and add however much ground beef you think you’ll need for a serving. I used about ¼ lb.
  2. Cook the ground beef for about 10 minutes depending on the setting of your stove.  You should be gradually flipping around the beef.
  3. Get one tortilla and place in a pan cook for about 30 seconds on each side or until slightly brown.
  4. Place the beef on top of the tortilla along with a small handful of shredded cheese, salsa, and I added my own touch of old bay (since I am a Baltimore girl born and raised) and salt and pepper.
  5. Fold the tortilla hotdog style and flip the tortilla back and forth for about 1 -2 minutes.
  6. Place Queso-Taco on a plate and cut into three pieces depending on how big you want them.
  7. You can add sour cream, guacamole, or hot sauce. I added extra old bay for that Maryland touch

This took a total of about 20 minuets and all cost under $20.00! Cheap and good what every college student loves!

I asked what my brother and dad thought of my creation and my dad said that he thought it was interesting and very different while my brother only had one complaint and that was that there wasn’t enough old bay.

Here is a link to another quesadilla recipe I found very interesting.
